           'As seen on television!'

I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of four 'Jersey Ambassadors' that Jersey Tourism are using to                promote the island this year. So you'll see me popping up on your TV screens from time to time, and I

also feature in my own online clip.

The First Eco-Active Event Provider Steps (And Cycles) Forward

What must be one of the most eco-friendly businesses in the island has just become Jersey’s first Eco-Active Event provider. Arthur The Blue Badge Guide, a business owned by Blue Badge-accredited tourist guide Arthur Lamy, not only takes people walking and cycling around Jersey, but Arthur usually uses a bike to get there as well!

Arthur says: “Because nearly all our events use leg power rather than fossil fuel, and because they take place in the open air, they encourage a healthy lifestyle. And at the same time our clients discover what an interesting and valuable resource the countryside is.”

Eco-Active Events is a new initiative from the States of Jersey Department for the Environment which aims to help event organizers integrate sustainability into their events. The criteria put forward ensures that events have minimal environmental impact, that they promote responsible sourcing, and that they encourage both healthy living and sustainable behaviour.

Olivia Copsey – Education and Awareness Officer for the States of Jersey Department for the Environment said: The Eco-Active Event scheme has been tailor-made for Jersey using UK Best Practice to provide practical guidance, details of local support and Eco-Active accreditation for organisations striving to reduce the impact of their event. By committing to the Eco-Active Events programme Arthur will be aiming to integrate sustainability values into all aspects of running his events and leave a positive legacy on the environment.”

As a freelance tourist guide Arthur’s clients include private individuals, schools, the media and corporate groups. Since 2001, he has led Jersey Tourism’s highly popular Around Island Walk, during which time he has taken over 3,000 ramblers around Jersey’s dramatic 50-mile coastline. He has also shown five-time Tour de France winner, Bernard Hinault, around the island by bicycle in preparation for last year’s visit of the Tour de Bretagne.

Among the initiatives that Arthur the Blue Badge Guide promotes is the use of public transport to get to its events, the ecological and cultural importance of areas that it uses, and the use of the internet as a means of communication and promotion.

“Our everyday work involves much of what Eco-Active Events promotes, so it was a very easy – you could say natural! - step to become an Eco-Active Event provider,” Arthur says: “The focus for us to carefully use resources, recycle products and buy locally, in addition to our already eco-friendly product, will both endorse our green credentials and reflect favourably on our bottom line.”

New early season walking and cycling tours start 6th February

I am  starting my early season walking and cycling season on 6th February, a weekly mix of four walks and two cycle tours. Two of the walks are new: St.Brelade's Bay - Before the Deckchairs and The Trinity Arms Ale Tail, and two are old favourites that were popular last year: A Maritime Meander and Glorious Gorey.

The two cycle tours are The Midweek Cyclist and The Weekend Cyclist. As usual the route on both these rides will be decided at the start, so that I can choose a route that matches the abilities of the group, and which takes them to places they haven't been to before.

To make it easier for everyone, please note that all these early season walks and cycle tours have no minimum number of participants but do require pre-booking by phone or by email.

  The Outdoors Show

With one ticket allowing show goers into The London Bike Show, The Tullet Prebon London Boat Show as well as  the Outdoors Show, it made good sense to take up Jersey Businerss Enterprises' offer of stand space at ExCel in London's Docklands.

The response to the activities available to visitors was good. Though many people had not considered Jersey as a destination before, once they discovered the opportunities for walking and cycling that exist here, they seemed keen to find out more. In fact the stand had run out of Pure Jersey magazines by Sunday evening.

Over the four days that the show ran, almost 1400 entered a competition promoted by Jersey Business Enterprise. Prizes were put forward by the various Jersey outdoor businesses that attended. I offered two days walking and a days cycling for two people, together with complimentary helmet and bike hire generously supplied by Jersey Cycle Tours, and £100 clothing voucher generously supplied by the Rohan Store in St.Helier.

The Channel Island Way - an Overview

To experience The Channel Islands - Walk this Way

“How can something that should be so similar, be so different?” These have to be the words of someone who has just walked the Channel Island Way.

While it is easy to gather the Channel Islands under any number of umbrellas, this new 110 mile, island-hopping, walking route dispels the notion that any of the islands are similar to their neighbours. In fact, the further you walk, the more each island asserts its own charm and personality. From the timeless charm of Herm’s Shell  Beach to Alderney’s heaving sea bird colonies, and Sark with its tractor-drawn taxis, each of the five islands are very much individual.

Conceived from an idea by islander Jennifer Bridge, this unique walking route provides an appealing platform from which to explore the differing coastlines of the five largest Channel Islands. When even the largest island can be circumnavigated in less than four days, every island falls into the ‘Short Break’ category. In fact, with a well-organised itinerary you could probably walk the whole set in a couple of weeks.

But why rush? The idea of a walking route set among several small islands has a charm of its own – Will your next visit take in one of the larger islands or a brace of little ones? And that’s before you choose how to arrive there. Adventure is alive and well in the Channel Islands, because some of the smaller islands can only be reached by boat!

Putting the pleasures of walking these dramatic and diverse coastlines to one side for a moment, don’t forget that because of the size of the islands, the comforts of cafe, pub and restaurant are never far away. The greatest distance between coastlines on any island is only nine miles. On the bigger islands the route is divided into easily manageable three or four mile long sections, with toilets, cafes and bus stops at either end.

So what makes the Channel Island Way so special? You can find dramatic coastlines nearly everywhere; you might even find the same high level of hospitality somewhere else, and it’s even possible that you could complete another walking route in a similarly achievable time.

But The Channel Island Way is where you can do it all!
